In 1942 the United States was still in the beginning of the war. To save on metals like copper and nickel for arms, the government issued silver for production of their nickel coins (35% silver content) between the years 1942-1945. 

To mark the difference in metal content, each coin has a large mintmark (P,S, or D) on the reverse side of the coin.
