U.S. 1892-1893 Chicago Columbus Silver Half Dollar Ring
U.S. 1892-1893 Chicago Columbus Silver Half Dollar Ring
This ring is made with an authentic Silver Half Dollar from 1892-1893. The coin was issued as America's first commemorative coin! In 1892 a 400 year celebration of Columbus was held in Chicago as a major national convention. As a way to raise funds, managers of the Columbus Convention convinced U.S. Minting to design and produce a commemorative coin sold for $1 to the public as collector coins.
5 Million coins were minted between 1892-1893 and the project was a dismal failure. Half the coins were melted down, almost half were released into normal circulation, and a small portion were actually sold. These coins make for excellent rings also! Wear something with a fascinating story.
