The Lincoln Wheat cent was introduced in 1909 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. Designed by sculptor Victor David Brenner, it was the first regularly circulating U.S. coin to feature the portrait of an actual person. The coin remained in production through 1958, with Lincoln on the obverse and wheat stalks on the reverse symbolizing prosperity and growth. During 1943, the U.S. Mint temporarily produced zinc-coated steel cents to conserve copper for World War II.
